Friday news roundup

Marianne Williamson is the latest Democratic candidate to drop out of the presidential election, Maggie Astor reported at the New York Times.

Williamson titled her announcement “With love and gratitude…” and tweeted, “A politics of conscience is still yet possible. And yes….love will prevail.” “30 minutes of bad politics twitter jokes incoming,” Astead Herndon warned.

The big news coming out of the UK today is that Samira Ahmed won her equal pay claim against the BBC according to Sarah Marsh at The Guardian.

In America, women have overtaken men as the majority of the workforce for the first time in nearly a decade, Amara Omeokwe reported in the Wall Street Journal. Ben Pershing thinks this “development likely reflects the future of the American workforce.”

As Australia battles deadly flames and unprecedented environmental destruction, a News Corp employee has slammed the organization for its “irresponsible”, “dangerous” and “damaging” coverage of the national bushfire crisis. Zoe Samios and Andrew Hornery covered the issue for SMH. Angus Livingston mentioned, “It's the email everyone's talking about and it only lasted on News Corp's servers for less than an hour.” ”Good for you Emily. Say it out loud and maybe they won't be able to keep everyone in check,” Nicole Lindsay encouraged.

‘They're looking for the remains’

Yesterday afternoon, the New York Times revealed video which shows the Ukrainian airliner being hit over Iran. “Video verified by The New York Times appears to show an Iranian missile hitting a plane above Parand, near Tehran’s airport, the area where a Ukrainian airliner stopped transmitting its signal before it crashed on Wednesday,” Evan Hill wrote. Christiaan Triebert, Malachy Browne, Sarah Stein Kerr, and Ainara Tiefenthäler covered the story.

Newsweek found sources who say that the Iranian missile system shooting down the Ukraine flight probably happened by mistake, according to Naveed Jamali, James LaPorta, and Tom O'Connor

In the LA Times, Sarah Parvini wrote a heartbreaking piece about Iranian-Canadians reeling after the jet crash which includes the quote: “They're looking for the remains, but they can't find anything.” “Siavash Ghafouri-Azar and Sara Mamani flew to Iran for their wedding and were flying back to Canada when the Ukraine International Airlines jetliner went down shortly after takeoff,” Javier Panzar wrote.

The Washington Post said that On the day U.S. forces killed Soleimani, they launched another secret operation targeting a senior Iranian official in Yemen. That’s according to John Hudson, Missy Ryan, and Josh Dawsey — the last of whom pointed out on Twitter that this second operation was “not successful.”

The AP reported that the Iraqi PM told the U.S. to decide on its mechanism for troop withdrawal

At the Wall Street Journal, there’s an explanation of how Trump’s New National Security Team Made Fast Work of the Iran Strike from Michael Bender, Michael Gordon, Gordon Lubold,  and Warren Strobel. Kate Milani wrote, “Inside the White House planning for the Iran strike: Like-minded advisers, minimal consultation with others.” Michael Crowley tweeted, “Lindsey Graham tells WSJ that Joint Chiefs chairman Mark Milley ‘is the biggest surprise. He is much more willing to take a risk to achieve a goal.’” Bender added, “Trump’s new national security team showed more cohesion and compliance than previous iterations. They also were less likely to consult in advance with other administration, Pentagon or State officials, congressional leaders or foreign allies.”

And Josh Campbell tweeted: “Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs serving in the Iraq War, ripped into the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee who accused Democrats of being ‘in love with terrorists.’” You can Devan Cole’s story about the congressional argument on CNN

‘Chaos is the point’

As we mentioned above, Marianne Williamson dropped out of the presidential race. But former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will fund his sizable campaign effort through November even if he loses the Democratic nomination. At least that’s what Stephanie Ruhle and Josh Lederman reported at NBC News.

Bloomberg News revealed that the U.S. Is Probing If Russia’s Targeting Biden To Help Trump Win Re-Election

Matthew Rosenberg, Nicole Perlroth, and David Sanger made it even clearer in the New York Times, where they wrote that Russian Hackers and Trolls Are Growing Stealthier in 2020 because “Chaos Is the Point.” Perloth explained, “Russia's 2020 playbook: GRU is setting up servers stateside, replacing old servers/email for ProtonMail, evading Facebook ad controls and (!!!) DHS is investigating a possible GRU role in U.S. ransomware attacks. Our months-long investigation is live.”

Weekend reading

You can start your weekend reading The Fall of Donald Trump’s Fixers, an excerpt in the Wall Street Journal from Pulitzer prize winners Joe Palazzolo and Michael Rothfeld’s new book. Michael Siconolfi tweeted: “Over the years, key guardians of Trump’s image won wealth and power by shielding him—but in the end, he offered little protection or respect in return.”

“Last year I wrote her obituary for the New York Times. But then her childhood friend sent me an email. This is what happened next,” Julie Satow revealed. Don’t miss the resulting story: She Was a Star of New York Real Estate, but Her Life Story Was a Lie. Hilary Howard deemed, “She was the female Don Draper. Maybe not as smooth, but just as intriguing.” “I bet my former @trdny colleagues will get a kick out of this one: a compelling read about an only-in-NY character,” Adam Fusfeld said.

Black Britons Know Why Meghan Markle Wants Out, Afua Hirsch wrote in the New York Times Opinion section. Hirsch believes, “If the media paid more attention to Britain’s communities of color, perhaps it would find Meghan and Harry's announcement far less surprising.”

Question of the Day

Yesterday, we asked: It might sound like the title of an episode of “30 Rock,” but “Lemon-Ups” are actually the newest offering in the line-up of what?

Answer: They’re the new Girl Scout cookies, which are stamped with empowering messages like “I Am a Leader” and “I Am a Go-Getter.”

Roberta Rosenberg was the first person to tweet the correct answer. Congratulations!

Your question of the day for today…Speaking of “30 Rock,” who actually came up with Liz Lemon's catchphrase "I want to go to there"?

As always, click here to tweet your answer to @MuckRack. We’ll announce the winners tomorrow!
