Trump news

Over at JustSecurity.org, Susan Simpson published Here's the Proof that Trump's "No Quid Pro Quo" Call Never Happened. “We weren't planning to publish today at Just Security. But this is an important and timely piece. VERY solid proof that the so-called "no quid pro quo" call did not occur. Exquisite analysis by @TheViewFromLL2 (big h/t to @emptywheel on this),” Ryan Goodman admitted. Dan Friedman tweeted that “the supposedly exonerating phone call Trump keeps citing didn’t happen, it seems.” Todd Zwillich added this is “exactly why the WH can’t produce a record of Sondland’s ‘Sept 9’ call.”

Greg Bluestein at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Georgia’s governor Brian Kemp plans to tap financial executive Kelly Loeffler to a U.S. Senate seat next week as he pushes to expand the Georgia GOP’s appeal to women who have fled the party in recent years. “The appointment would defy President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders who have aggressively urged him to appoint U.S. Rep. Doug Collins,” Jonathan Martin pointed out.

Checking in with the 2020 candidates

Elizabeth Warren’s Wealth Tax Has Wide Support, Except Among One Group, Ben Casselman and Jim Tankersley reported in the New York Times. “This is incredible: 59% of Republican men without a college degree support a wealth tax. Wealth tax polls higher with Republicans than with independents among both men and women?” Lee Fang pointed out. And that one group that doesn’t support it? “Republican men with college degrees,” Eugene Scott tweeted.

Elsewhere in the New York Times, you can read about How Kamala Harris’s Campaign Unraveled from Jonathan Martin, Astead Herndon, and Alexander Burns. “An explosive resignation letter, warring factions, and her own allies, on record, calling for the campaign manager to be fired. ‘We still do not have a real plan to win,’” Herndon tweeted.

Shane Savitsky at Axios explained Why Baby Yoda should scare Michael Bloomberg and Deval Patrick. His main point is that “Baby Yoda is driving almost twice as many average social media interactions as any 2020 Democrat.” “Thankful for @ssavitsky and the prime content he provides us @axios,” Stef W. Kight announced.

Umm...what?!

More Friday news

The New York Times published Jose A. Del Real’s piece on How Racism Ripples Through Rural California’s Pipes. “In my latest story, I explore how water infrastructure in California's Central Valley remains tainted by the legacy of Jim Crow. This story is about water, but it's also about the enduring legacy of racism. Please give it a read,” he wrote.

Jessica Glenza wrote a story in The Guardian about an Ohio bill that orders doctors to “reimplant an ectopic pregnancy” or face “abortion murder” charges. “Pro-life that’s a lie, you don’t care if women die,” Sian Norris said. Susan J. Demas added, “Both sides journalism requires us to take the Republican viewpoint seriously for their bill that defies medical science and could kill women. That flies in the face of journalism's goal to provide accurate information. More outlets must grapple with this.”

Sam Cooper at Global News in Canada reported that a B.C. politician broke his silence to say China detained me, is interfering “in our democracy.” Andrew Russell signaled this is a “major exclusive here.”

Boris Johnson Is Threatening To Review Channel 4's Broadcasting Licence After They Replaced Him With An Ice Sculpture At Thursday's Debate, per Mark Di Stefano and Alex Wickham at BuzzFeed News. Alan White called it a “new extremely mad @alexwickham SCOOP.”

Unai Emery has been sacked as the Arsenal manager after 18 months in charge, the BBC reported.

Answer: According to CNN, the gobblers will rest at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg.
